My day just gets better as I’m immediately summoned to meet with the litigation team, including the partners responsible for pushing my promotion forward. The conference room is a pressure cooker, and I’m the main dish being served up for everyone’s criticism. Not for my paranormal moonlighting (that’s still under wraps) or my slightly unethical actions against Margaret Mitchell (those are going to my grave, if I can help it), but for the day job the former two activities keep interrupting.

I stand tall at the head of the polished mahogany table, but it’s less like a position of power and more like I’m about to get a royal dressing-down from the top brass.

“Emily, your delay in filing the Mitchell suit is unacceptable,” Mr. Davenport, the head partner in our branch, says from his seat, which seems more like a throne of judgment than office furniture. “We needed those papers filed yesterday.”

“Sorry, sir,” I start, but before I can continue, Stuart chimes in.

“Perhaps Emily has been too busy socializing with her... interesting circle of friends to attend to her professional obligations,” he says, the word ‘interesting’ oozing sarcasm like pus from a wound.

I shoot him a look that could sear steak. “My personal life doesn’t interfere with my work, Stuart. And why are you here? You’re not even on the litigation team.”

A few partners suppress laughs while other associates shuffle uncomfortably, hoping my verbal crosshairs won’t swivel their way.

“Look,” I say, steering the conversation back on track and pulling out any Hail Mary’s I can think of. “The timing of the lawsuit is critical. If we file now, we risk jumping the gun. Lucian’s trial is the linchpin here. A guilty verdict would set a precedent, solidifying our case.”

“Lucian is obviously guilty,” someone mutters from the back, another voice echoing agreement.

“Clearly just because he’s a vampire,” I snap, irritation making my words sharper than intended. “But we deal in facts. We need that concrete guilty verdict. Otherwise, it’s just hearsay and speculation, and a jury could decide we brought the case against the wrong party. You must have heard the news reports, the preliminary hearing had a politician campaigning on paranormal rights, for God’s sake. Get enough sympathy for the vampire community and we’re toast.”

The room falls silent as my argument sinks in. Even Stuart’s smug grin wavers, and I can practically feel the tide turning. They might not like it, or me much right now, but they can’t argue with logic.

“Fine,” Mr. Davenport finally concedes with a sigh that speaks volumes of his skepticism. “We’ll delay the lawsuit. But make no mistake, Emily, your career is riding on this. Do not disappoint us.”

“Understood,” I reply, my tone ironclad. I’ve danced on tighter ropes than this, and I won’t let them see me stumble.

The meeting adjourns with a scatter of chairs and low murmurs. I gather my papers, poised to prove myself once again.
